S & S is a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) approved large scale mining corporation, along the Little Beaver River, just south of New Castle, PA.
In 1989, S&S acquired the mining rights to an extremely large plot of land which contained a high quality topsoil, and a very consistent sub-soil material that was ideally suited for use on the skin portion of baseball/softball fields. The initial focus was
to process and deliver a high quality topsoil and baseball/softball infield mix into the Tri-State area.
However, S&S soon recognized that simply relying on a consistent supply of material was not enough to serve the needs of the rapidly expanding athletic field market. Early spring weather conditions, the narrow window of time available to maintain fields, the increased use and sharing of facilities, along with the introduction of new field maintenance products motivated S&S to
expand both their product line and equipment. S&S began to carry “calcined clay” moisture control products such as Fielder’s
Choice, Pro’s Choice, and Diamond Pro and expanded into off-site services such as turf aerification, top dressing, field rennovation, and laser grading.
Most recently, S&S has branched into the fields of specialty landscaping. S&S has been meeting the challenge of providing
specialty soils that meet almost any technical specification. These custom soils are often necessary for architectural
landscaping designs, areas with mineral deficiencies, or areas of pH imbalance.
